Our in-resident skin therapist Dana returns. This time uncovering the secrets behind the face-mask.
What is a face-mask?
Think bubble bath, special meal, delicious cocktail or a yummy dessert. That is what a mask does- it spoils, pampers and rewards your skin.
The more natural ingredients the mask contains, the more goodness your skin gets.
There are many masks for different skin types & condition, however, the aim of any mask is the same- to charge your skin with a "super meal."
Do masks really work?
Does a freshly made vitamin-infused smoothie work? It does. Mask should work too, as long as you know what your skin really needs.
It is less likely that your extremely dry skin will like a charcoal mask and that, if your skin is oily, you would avoid a waxy, oil-rich mask.
Masks do work but bear in mind that the skin would only absorb as much as it can. Some masks might make you go "wow", but the "wow" factor will only last a day. If you are looking for long-term skin health maintenance, then using an appropriate mask weekly will be an act of rewarding your skin for all the hard work it has done. Your skin will love it!
What to avoid in a mask?
There is a beauty in simplicity. Go for known rather than the unknown. Who knows what exactly a snail slime or snake venom does and how is it sourced?
On the other spectrum, there are some seriously unpronounceable ingredients we have in the cosmetic care industry. These usually derived from the synthetic compound. Nowadays, we take such great care about our food and bodies. Would you eat something that sounds like Butylene glycol dicaprylate, or Cetyl dimethicone copolyol? Even my auto-correcting system cannot recognise these words.
So next time you buy a mask, look at the list of ingredients, the first one on the list would be the highest in content with the last ingredient to be with the lowest content.
What ingredients should I look for?
Be realistic with masks. Often people buy many and end up using them only when remembered. It is about quality and not quantity after all. Look at the shelf-life of the mask, if it is natural-based, it's shelf-life will be around 6 months only. Use it before it loses its potency.
Believing in the power of nature, I encourage you to invest in a product line that is not only natural but ecological. Do not skip reading the list of ingredients. If first 5 ingredients left you clueless, then maybe that is not what your skin would like in the long-term.
Think of a mask as a power smoothie. It should include plenty of vitamins, antioxidants and goodness.
Björk and Berries value transparency and have a rather minimalistic approach to skincare, believing in less is more, slow beauty.
We believe in transparency and never rush through production processes, choosing the best and time-proven ingredients.
Is there a mask that suits all?
Most possibly yes. Firming Hydrating Mask has a spectrum of ingredients complimenting and working in synergy with each other. It's unique formula subtly multi-tasking and targeting different skin concerns at once.
White Clay detoxifies the skin and works wonderfully for pore tightening and deep cleansing, whilst Aloe Vera calms the skin and gently hydrates it. Shea Butter and Marigold are fantastic moisturisers. Glycerin attracts the moisture and holds it, controlling and managing the water loss.
From my experience, this mask works wonderfully for the most sensitive skin and even sunburn skin. This is due to calming and repairing Aloe Vera.
